An Ethics of Care in the Time of Nelson Mandela

On Wednesday September 30th, 2015, Forum for Afrika Studies in collaboration with the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies and the Nordic Africa Institute, hosted the Nelson Mandela Memorial lecture. Professor Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela, senior research professor at the University of the Free State, and the current Claude Ake Visiting Chair at Uppsala University, has worked with Nelson Mandela and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and has published extensively on the topics of trauma, memory and forgiveness. Her lecture, An Ethics of Care in the Time of Nelson Mandela, discussed some of the teachings that Nelson Mandela strived to implement, as well as current developments in South Africa and race and class relations in larger contexts. The lecture was attended by some 50 researchers and students from many different departments, and sparked inspiring comments and questions.
