The Liberation Struggle in Guinea-Bissau: between educational practice and experiences

CSD-CEFO/NRHU, in collaboration with the Swedish Network in the History of Education and the Forum for Africa Studies, held their third Sustainability seminar for this autumn on Tuesday 29 September 2015. The invited speaker was Sónia Vaz Borges, PhD Candidate at the Institute for Education at Humboldt University, Berlin. She presented part of her PhD research on education in Guinea-Bissau during the years leading up to indepence, specifically how education was practiced and sustained in the liberated areas of the country. Her talk, as well as the following discussion, was informative and sparked great interest among the c:a 20 attendants. The seminar was even attended by Birgitta Dahl, former Swedish politician and Speaker of Parliament, who worked together with freedom-fighters in Guinea-Bissau to print schoolbooks for children in the liberated areas, in the 1970s.
