Migration/mobility in the Age of Trump
On Tuesday, March 28, 2017, Forum for Africa Studies co-sponsored a pub discussion with Etnograferna at Smålands Nation. The event began with short presentations by Véronique Simon (Dept of Education, Forum for Africa Studies) and Jesper Bjarnesen (Nordic Africa Institute). Véronique spoke about the difficulties faced by immigrants in Sweden, who either do not have documentation, or are forced to live without documentation as a result of Swedish bureaucracy. Jesper then spoke about how popular perceptions of migration are often misinterpreted and framed in ways that portray migrants as either dangerous or ungrateful. Following the speakers, attendees broke into small groups to discuss the issues brought up in a more casual environment than is usually possible in classroom atmospheres.
