The Making of Authority in Plural Legal Systems:

A Study of Community Courts in Maputo

On March 17, 2017, Fabio Provenzano (Centre of African Studies, University of Copenhagen) presented his research concerning community courts in Maputo, Mozmabique.  These community courts, according to Provenzano, operate outside of the state, but maintain a level of authority and legitimacy within the communities they serve.  The courts often address disputes involving witchcraft accusations, allegations that state courts do not deal with, and so it is up to the community judges to resolve such disputes.

We thank Fabio for his thought-provoking presentation, as well as everyone who  attended this seminar.
